American Legion Auxiliary
Mission Statement
Guided by the spirit of “Service, Not Self,” the American Legion Auxiliary supports The American Legion and honors the sacrifices of those who have served our nation. We are dedicated to strengthening the lives of veterans, active-duty military members, and their families—both at home and abroad.
For God and Country, we advocate for veterans, educate our communities, mentor and inspire our youth, and promote patriotism, responsible citizenship, peace, and security. Through service, fellowship, and compassion, we strive to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who have given so much for our freedom.
Who We Are
The American Legion Auxiliary strives to be a premier service organization in every community, working alongside The American Legion to provide meaningful support to our veterans, military members, and their families.
Through service, fellowship, patriotism, and compassion, we are committed to building stronger communities, inspiring future generations, and shaping a positive future grounded in peace, security, and respect for those who serve our country.
What We Do
Millions of dollars. Millions of hours. One powerful commitment to service.
Every year, American Legion Auxiliary volunteers give their time, talents, and resources to support veterans, military families, children, youth, and communities across the nation. For more than a century, the Auxiliary has demonstrated the power of service and the lasting difference volunteers can make.
As one of the nation’s largest patriotic women’s service organizations, the American Legion Auxiliary continues to carry out its mission through programs that strengthen families, support veterans, educate young people, serve our communities, and honor those who have served our country.
AUXILIARY EMERGENCY FUND
The Auxiliary Emergency Fund reflects the spirit of “Women Helping Women.” The program provides temporary assistance to eligible Auxiliary members who experience a financial emergency, helping them through difficult times and reminding them that they are not alone.
CHILDREN & YOUTH
The Children & Youth program is dedicated to improving the lives of children and strengthening families. The Auxiliary supports programs and services that address the physical, emotional, educational, and spiritual needs of young people while promoting safe, healthy, and supportive environments where children can thrive.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
The Auxiliary believes that serving others is at the heart of a strong community. Through volunteer projects, partnerships, and hands-on service, members respond to local needs and work to make their communities stronger, more caring, and more connected.
EDUCATION
Education is a foundation of opportunity and a cornerstone of a strong democracy. The Auxiliary supports quality education and encourages young people to pursue their educational goals. Members work with schools, educators, and community organizations to help students succeed and access opportunities beyond high school.
GIRLS STATE & GIRLS NATION
American Legion Auxiliary Girls State and Girls Nation are premier youth leadership and civic education programs. Girls State gives young women the opportunity to experience government in action while developing leadership skills, understanding civic responsibility, and gaining a deeper appreciation for our democratic process. Since its beginning in 1937, the program has introduced generations of young women to responsible citizenship and service to their communities and country.
LEGISLATIVE
The Auxiliary encourages members to become informed and engaged citizens. Members learn about issues affecting veterans, military families, children, and communities and communicate with elected representatives about matters important to the organization’s mission. Through informed advocacy, Auxiliary members help ensure that the needs of those they serve are heard.
NATIONAL SECURITY
The Auxiliary supports a strong national defense and encourages members to understand the issues that affect the security of our nation. Through education and awareness, members recognize the importance of supporting those who protect our freedom and keeping our nation strong and prepared.
POPPY
The Poppy Program is one of the Auxiliary’s oldest and most recognizable traditions. Around Memorial Day and throughout the year, volunteers distribute red poppies in remembrance of those who served and sacrificed. Contributions received help support veterans, their families, and programs serving disabled and hospitalized veterans.
VETERANS AFFAIRS & REHABILITATION
Supporting veterans is at the heart of the American Legion Auxiliary. Through Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, members provide assistance, advocacy, volunteer service, and support to veterans and their families. From visiting hospitalized veterans to helping connect families with resources, Auxiliary members work to ensure that those who served our country are never forgotten.
SERVICE WITH PURPOSE
The American Legion Auxiliary continues a proud tradition of service, compassion, patriotism, and community. Through every program and every volunteer hour, members honor the sacrifices of our military while making a meaningful difference in the lives of veterans, families, children, and communities.
